Balance in the Elderly : Physiologic and Rehabilitation Approach
Kim Eun-Joo

Abstract
Balance, the ability to maintain the center of gravity over the base of support within a given sensory environment, is composed of several subcomponents and influenced by several systems (sensory, musculoskeletal, and central and peripheral nervous systems). With advancing age, changes related to normal aging and those associated with diseases, can affect the integrity and function of those systems and also affect the balance system, which requires a complex integration of many components. Balance dysfunction has important implications for social activity because this is a major cause for injury, falls, and loss of physical functioning in the elderly. Therefore, a thorough assessment into the cause of balance dysfunction in an elderly patient is essential to the implementation of appropriate treatment, usually a multidisciplinary approach.
